Tea matcha, allowed during breastfeeding

Yes and no! Kusmi strongly advises you to ask the question to a healthcare professional. Only he will be able to tell you if your consumption of tea matcha is a risk or not during your breastfeeding period. Know that everyone is different and that some women will be able to continue to consume their matcha weekly.

Tea matcha and caffeine

Tea matcha is a powdered green tea; it therefore contains theine (a molecule similar to caffeine). It is estimated that a cup of green tea corresponds to thirty milligrams of theine. For tea matcha, it is a little higher: between 50 and 70 mg. Why a higher content? Because it is the entire green tea leaf that is reduced to powder and then consumed. This is why tea matcha is richer in nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants.

Young mothers could therefore consume it as long as the quantity is controlled and a doctor has given approval. Indeed, it is generally recommended to limit stimulants during breastfeeding because caffeine passes into breast milk when ingested in too large quantities.

Tea matcha and iron absorption

Tea matcha, like other teas, makes iron absorption more difficult. It would therefore be better to consume your tea matcha during or just after meals. The best is to save this little pleasure for other times of the day.

How many cups of tea matcha per day when breastfeeding?

Unfortunately, we cannot give you an exact answer; we advise you to ask your doctor. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, as we have explained, it would be recommended to control your caffeine consumption. It's all a question of quantity! One or two cups a day, depending on how you dose your tea matcha, would be recommended as a general rule. Preferably away from meals and after seeking the advice of your doctor.

What if we drink more for a day?

Don't panic if you lose count for a day. It seems that theine disappears within 24 hours: in this case, talk to your doctor directly. Breast milk produced after this time will no longer contain theine.

The benefits of tea matcha on our health

Tea matcha is a drink with multiple benefits. Very rich in antioxidants and in particular in polyphenols EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), the matcha like all other green teas, helps fight oxidative stress and preserve cell youth.
Antioxidants play a very important role in the body and are interesting from the point of view of the immune system because they help boost immunity.

Also found in tea matcha many nutrients, minerals and vitamins (C and B for example). Finally, the presence of L-theanine allows it to provide you with energy while remaining calm. Indeed, this amino acid helps reduce the feeling of anxiety and mental and physical stress.

Did you know that the matcha, like all teas, is a stimulant and not an exciting like coffee? Herbal teas and infusions, a good alternative

Herbal teas and infusions also represent a very good alternative if you want to reduce or stop your tea consumption while breastfeeding. For the exact list of plants authorized during this period, consult your doctor. He will be able to direct you to breastfeeding herbal teas, specially designed to promote the production of breast milk.

Fennel, verbena, lime blossom and chamomile will be excellent traveling companions. Containing neither theine nor caffeine, the rooibos (like our rooibos almond or vanilla) will also offer you pleasure and voluptuousness! This drink originating from South Africa, also called “red bush” or “red tea”, is in fact part of the infusion family.
