Iconic spices in tea blends

The word spice is one of those terms whose meaning has evolved considerably over the ages. Etymologically, it comes from the Latin species, which broadly means a commodity or even merchandise. But in its most common use, a spice is used to flavour dishes or drinks, bringing them a taste that is both powerful and subtle. Spices can come from various parts of plants, from their bark and roots to their leaves and seeds. Requiring plenty of sunshine, they are mainly grown in tropical regions. Truly remarkable, spices pair perfectly with tea!

Each spice has its own personality. Cinnamon brings sweetness and warmth, ginger awakens the cup with its characteristic kick, and cardamom, more subtle, evokes traditional recipes from the East and India.

These combinations give rise to blends that have become true essentials. More recent creations do not hesitate to think outside the box, pairing spices with citrus, vanilla, or floral notes for more surprising tastings.

An ideal tea for all seasons

Often associated with cooler days, spiced tea is actually suited to every season. Served hot, it naturally fits into a moment of relaxation, a cosy breakfast, or a soothing break, and is frequently paired with Christmas teas. Served iced, it transforms completely: lighter, more refreshing, and perfect for sunny days.

This versatility makes it a drink that can be enjoyed on its own, but it pairs just as well with pastries, biscuits, or desserts with spiced notes.

Chai tea and chai latte: the essentials of spiced tea

It is impossible to talk about spiced tea without mentioning chai. Originating in India, this traditional blend combines black tea with an assortment of spices: cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves and sometimes a hint of black pepper. The result: a generous cup with warm, comforting flavours.

The chai latte is its gentler version. It starts with an infusion of chai tea, to which milk or a plant-based drink is added, creating a smooth texture where the spices mingle with the creaminess of the milk. Now a coffee shop classic, it appeals to those looking for an alternative to coffee.

Whether you prefer an authentic chai or a creamier chai latte, these two recipes perfectly capture all the richness of spiced tea and will inspire you to explore more of these exotic flavours.
